The path hub

The return-to-duty process, in the order the rules actually run it.

You failed or refused a DOT drug or alcohol test, so the Clearinghouse put you in 'prohibited' status — you cannot drive a CDL job until the return-to-duty process is finished. Six steps stand between that status and driving again. They run in one order, one person — your SAP — controls the middle of it, and the Clearinghouse only records part of it. Here is the whole path.

Step 1: Choose & Designate Your SAP

Choose a SAP, then designate that SAP in the Clearinghouse — in that order.

Step 2: The SAP Evaluation

Sit the face-to-face evaluation. It will end with an education or treatment requirement — that is the rule, not a verdict on you.

Step 3: Education or Treatment

Finish the exact program your SAP prescribed, and keep the proof.

Step 4: Follow-Up Evaluation & Eligibility

Go back to the same SAP. Compliance gets you the eligibility date — and your follow-up plan is created at the same moment.

Step 5: The Return-to-Duty Test

Take the test only after eligibility — observed, negative, and reported. The report is what flips your status.

Step 6: The Follow-Up Testing Years

Work, and test when called: at least 6 unannounced tests in year one, on a plan that follows you for up to 5 years.

The honest shape of the timeline: the dashboard mirrors the recorded milestones — violation, SAP dates, eligibility, test result — and shows nothing during education or treatment, because that step is not recorded. No costs, no deadlines for the driver, no state reinstatement steps, and no hiring help appear anywhere in FMCSA's driver materials. That gap is what the six pages above fill.

Included in the $49 ReturnToDuty Kit

  • Choosing a SAP: the price table ($399–$600 bundled is normal), the questions to ask before you designate, split-pricing and bait-pricing red flags, and the payment-plan truth
  • The no-job path in full: registering as an owner-operator in the Clearinghouse and designating a C/TPA for the test — what step services charge versus doing each piece yourself
  • The follow-up years: plan math (at least 6 tests in year one, up to 5 years), changing employers mid-plan, and what a new employer must do
  • Getting hired: the SAP-friendly carrier search method, what to say on an application and in an interview, and the consent forms — honestly, with no invented list of companies
  • Records and licenses: Clearinghouse consent, what employers actually see, the state downgrade defense timeline, and the cost tracker worksheet
