Your violation
A positive DOT drug test puts you in prohibited status the moment it is reported. Your job driving is paused — your career does not have to be.
A verified positive drug test is a Clearinghouse violation. Under 49 CFR 40.285 you cannot do safety-sensitive work until the full SAP process is complete and a negative return-to-duty test is reported. There is no appeal that skips the SAP, no waiting period that expires on its own, and no product that cleans this up.
Separately from the job, your state must downgrade your CDL under Clearinghouse-II (within 60 days of FMCSA's notice, 49 CFR 383.73(q)). Finishing the federal process makes you eligible for reinstatement; your state then restores the privilege by its own steps. Your state's page.
Designate a SAP → the evaluation → education or treatment → the follow-up evaluation and eligibility → the return-to-duty test → the follow-up testing years. Walk the whole path, or price it first on the costs page.

One payment of $49. No subscription. The kit is a web page you can return to and print — the full playbook for choosing a SAP, taking the test with no employer, managing the follow-up years, and getting hired again.
Run the free checker on this site to get your stage and next step, then choose and designate a SAP. FMCSA counted 210,007 drivers in prohibited status as of February 1, 2026, and 79.5% had not started — starting is the step that separates the drivers who come back from the count.
Prohibited status bars safety-sensitive (CDL) work. Non-driving and non-CDL work is a different question — many drivers take it while they finish the process, and the SAP steps do not require you to be employed at all.
